August 27, 2012

Staff:  Pastor Paul Babcock, Eva Durand

Council Members: Council Chair Bill Clement, Donna Curran, Carolyn Groves, Martha

Harris, Christina Lawrenz, David Reed, Kathleen Thomas

Advisory Members: Katherine Cook, Donna Reed, Michelle Swain

Guests:  Sue Ann Kleist, Tom Kleist

Bill opened the meeting at 7:04 p.m. with a devotional from the third chapter of the book of Jonah reminding us of the benefits of mercy and forgiveness.

Christina moved that the minutes of the July 23rd meeting be approved, and Carolyn seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

Bill welcomed guests and asked for any comments they might have.

Spiritual Growth  and Adult Education Team

Donna Reed listed the members of the new team:  Pastor Paul, Jan Boyd, Samantha Cheek, Tom Kleist, Donna Reed, Wanda Samuels, Mark Shuck, and Judith Tanner.  They have met three times and have created a job description.  The team plans to survey the congregation to further determine the needs of the church body.

Carolyn moved to accept the report as presented and charged Donna to return to the team to continue their work.  Christina seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

Monthly Review:  Martha shared a detailed explanation of profit and losses for July.  A shortage in unrestricted receipts is largely responsible for the $6,730.86 deficiency for the year thus far.  She also offered a budget expense sheet indicating where various line items fall within the percent of their budget usage for the year.

2013 budgeting process:  The finance committee did not meet this month. Next month, they plan to offer figures from the various groups that have submitted budget requests.

Stewardship Campaign:  Bill and Anita Neuenswander have led the stewardship campaign for the past several years, but have other obligations this year.  Bill C. recommended that we follow the format that has been established in the last few years for obtaining pledges.  We will address the congregation in the morning worship service.  Christina suggested that we pursue the use of electronic withdrawals.

Policy for inactive restricted accounts:  The proposal will be tabled until Mike Curran is present.

David reported on the various activities of the trustees this past month.  The carillons have been repaired.  The trustees are planning to have someone do an inspection on the roof.  Additionally, they are planning to replace the carpet in the front of the sanctuary.  Other carpeting may be replaced as feasible.  They have also turned their attention to the   playground  and possible play structures.  They will need to determine which type of structure would be best and may need to organize a fundraiser to finance the project.

Christina reported that the team is going to sponsor a coffee talk at 8:30 a.m. on September 16 to explain how the budget works.  Mike Curran will be the speaker.  Coffee and donuts will be provided.

Staff appreciation day will be observed on October 7.

Youth Ministries

Eva shared that the youth had a kick-off party and conducted a youth-led service.  Eva and four Baldwin youth will be organizing the annual Project Revolution on September 8th at Worden.  156 youth from the Five Rivers District are pre-registered for the event.

Hannah, the new Jr. High youth leader has begun work.  Bill suggested that she be introduced to the congregation.

Barbara Pressgrove will be teaching the junior high Sunday school class.

The youth are planning a one-day mission trip to Joplin, MO for the Fall.

Pastor Paul

Pastor Paul’s sermon series starts Sept. 9.  The topic will be United Methodism in six parts.

The nominating committee begins its work on September 6 to prepare for 2013.  The Church Conference will be held on the 6th of November.

Bill offered a final prayer before closing the meeting at 8:07 p.m..

Respectfully submitted,

Katherine Cook
