Minutes - May 2012

Baldwin First United Methodist Church

Church Council Minutes

May 29, 2012

Staff: Pastor Paul Babcock, Eva Durand

Council Members: Council Chair Bill Clement, Donna Curran, Mike Curran, Adam

Hazelwood, Christina Lawrenz, Clay Thomas, Kathleen Thomas

Advisory Members: Katherine Cook, Michelle Swain

Bill opened the meeting at 7:04 with a prayer.  He offered a devotional based on Mark 2 and Pick Up Your Mat and Walk.

Adam moved that the minutes of the April 23rd meeting be approved.  Christina seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

Christina shared that the new youth assistant, Hannah Schaake, will begin working in late August.  The policies and procedures are nearly in place.  The team is working on a congregation-wide chat to clarify budgetary concerns; a date has yet to be determined.

Mike shared that there is no official financial report for April at this time. However, he shared that the amount given exceeded the budgeted amount of income needed for the month of April.  He anticipates that giving for May will be less than budgetary demands.

The finance committee is working on drafting a policy for the use of restricted funds that have been inactive for some time.  At present, the money is available, but is not being used.  A new policy will allow the committee to absorb such funds into the general fund after making a presentation to the council and to the charge conference.

Adam shared that the trustees have decided to postpone special projects at this time.  They will revisit these projects after the third quarter when they can examine the financial position of the church.

Several air conditioners have been made available for Sunday School rooms and will be installed this coming Saturday.

Eva thanked Adam and David Reed for installing a TV shelf in the youth room.

Three graduating seniors will be honored at a dinner and celebration this coming Sunday.  The youth are working hard on getting the mission trip ready; 32 youth and adults will be offering their service in Delaware.  Bible study will be continued through the summer.  Eva reported that “lots of great, spiritual things are happening with the youth. “

Junior High Sunday School teachers are needed.  There is also a need for more adult volunteers for senior high youth group in the fall.

Pastor Paul

Pastor Paul shared that he will be working throughout the summer to revitalize lessons, methods, and practices of confirmation.

He reminded the council that on May 29th, 80 years ago, the first worship service was held in this building.

Next week, June 6-9, is Kansas East Annual Conference.  Kathleen Thomas is the lay representative.  There is a possibility that we will become one annual conference with Kansas West and Nebraska.

The next meeting of the church council is June 25th.

Bill closed with a prayer at 7:49 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Katherine Cook
