Church Council Minutes

March 26, 2012

Staff:   Pastor Paul Babcock, Shelly Todd

Council Members:  Council Chair Bill Clement, Mike Curran, Carolyn Groves, Martha Harris,

Christine Lawrenz, David Reed, Kathleen Thomas,

Advisory Members:  Katherine Cook, Wanda Samuels, Michelle Swain

Guests: Nancy Arnold, Tom Kleist, Stan Vickers

Bill called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. with an expression of gratitude to Nancy Arnold and the ABC committee.  Nancy reported that the final payment on this loan has been made, and asked whether future donations designated to this project may be applied to the copy machine payment with the permission of the donors.  She will contact those people who have remaining balances on their pledges.

Bill introduced David Reed as the new chair of UMM who will be replacing Dan Neuenswander on the Council.

Bill offered a devotion from Mark 15, followed by a homily from Norman Cousins and The Healing Heart reminding us of the virtue of patience.

Martha moved and Carolyn seconded the motion to accept the minutes of the February 27 meeting.  The motion carried.

Financial Report

Martha offered a balance sheet as of February 29, 2012.  It was noted that only a minimal amount needed to be taken from the memorial fund to pay off the ABC loan.  Bill offered thanks for the willingness of the family to make those funds available.

The profit and loss document indicated that we are nearly $8,000 behind in meeting annual expenses.  She anticipates that unrestricted contributions in March will help offset this shortage.

Mike clarified that budgetary concerns lie in the fact that our giving has not matched our budgetary increase for this year.

Trustees Report

Bill offered the trustees report on behalf of Adam.  The trustees agreed to look into three possible improvements for this year.  The team has decided that heating and air conditioning will be put on hold indefinitely, and they will continue to examine the other two issues, which are to remodel the restrooms and youth room downstairs and install some sort of fire safety system to the church.  They have also been working on policies for the use of the church.

Pastor Parish

Pastor Parish was represented by Chris.  Team members are interviewing for the position of bookkeeper and hope to be making a decision soon.

Staff Reports

Shelly is transitioning between Sunday school teachers.  Marcia O’Neil will be joining the staff. Beth O’Neil will join the teachers with the start of the school year.

VBS is scheduled for July 8-12.  Volunteers and donors are invited to help ‘students soar to new heights.’

Pastor Paul is looking forward to the events and activities of holy week.  He plans to begin a new tradition of celebrating joy and humor on the Sunday following Easter.  April 29th is Confirmation Sunday; five youth will be confirmed.

Pastor Paul presented a list of people who have agreed to serve on the new committee for adult ministries.  Chris moved and Carolyn seconded the motion to accept Donna Reed, Jan Boyd, Samantha Cheek, Tom Kleist, Wand Samuels, and Judith Tanner as the members of the Adult Education and Ministries Team.  The motion carried.

Bill submitted the updated long-range plan for spiritual growth, relationship/intentional fellowship, finance, membership/welcome, communication/technology, and facilities.  Martha moved to accept the priorities of 2012 as part of the complete document for the overall plan.  Chris seconded the motion; the motion carried.

Michelle Swain reminded the committee that the youth will be offering car detailing as a fundraiser on April 15th.  March 30th is the annual gospel extravaganza at Baker beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the chapel.

Bill offered a closing prayer.

Respectfully submitted,

Katherine Cook
