Council Minutes 6-27-11

Baldwin First United Methodist Church

Church Council Meeting

June 27, 2011

Council Members:  Council Chair Bill Clement, Donna Curran, Mike Curran, Carolyn

Groves, Chris Lawrenz, Darren Lawrenz, Kathleen Thomas

Staff:  Shelly Todd

Advisory Members:  Katherine Cook, Barbara Pressgrove, Michelle Swain

Guests:  Judy Anderson, Sue Ann Kleist, Tom Kleist

Bill opened the meeting at 7:09 p.m. with a devotional from James W. Moore’s Have You Ever Seen a Hearse Pulling a Trailer? reminding us that God and His miracles are present everywhere. He followed the story with a prayer.

Chris made a motion to approve the minutes of the May meeting; Mike seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

Bill opened the floor to comments from church members.  Judy Anderson spoke in support of the practice of using traditional hymns rather than contemporary music.  She also suggested that if the council pursues the purchase of a parsonage, they offer their patronage to Stephens Real Estate.

Mike shared the financial report.  He offered statements of financial position, budget vs. actual income and expenses, budget areas with released restricted contributions, and a financial income and expense summary report from January through May.  Records for May indicate that we are $981 ahead in unrestricted donations, but $9,319 over budget for a deficit of $8,738.

Mike shared that it is time to start working on the budget for next year. He asked that staff and committee chairs provide a preliminary list of their needs next month so that initial information from the finance committee may be made available to the council by September.

Early Fall is also the time to present stewardship concerns to the congregation.  Bill and Anita Neuenswander have been asked to serve as stewardship chairs for the second consecutive year.

Darren updated the council on the parsonage search.  The pastor and his wife have rented a home on an 8-month lease while the council continues to search for a well-built, energy efficient home that will meet conference requirements.

Michelle broached the concern of fitting the microphone to Pastor Paul.  The trustees have been asked to appoint a designated sound person.

SPPRC will have their first meeting with Pastor Paul on July 18th.  The committee has established their agenda for the remainder of the year.

Bill reported that the council needs to find a temporary replacement for Colin Thomas as youth representative to the council.

Shelly reported that VBS is scheduled for July 10-14.  44 children are already registered, and adult and youth leadership positions have been filled.  She promises it will be a fun week.

Children’s ministries is previewing a new curriculum called “Buzz.”  Teachers will meet after VBS to discuss their preferences in curriculum.

Barb suggested that there needs to be clarity on the issues of ‘welcoming’ and ‘membership. ‘ Bill suggested that the team meet to gather their thoughts and then engage in a dialogue with Pastor Paul to determine how he sees the division of responsibilities.

Bill closed the meeting with a prayer at 8:39 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Katherine Cook
